Dictators and Business Regulation: A Comparison of Indonesia and Kazakhstan

Dictatorship has been a prevalent form of government in various countries throughout history, with Indonesia and Kazakhstan being no exceptions. Both countries have experienced periods of authoritarian rule under dictators who have significantly shaped their political landscapes and business regulations. In this blog post, we will examine the similarities and differences in how dictators in Indonesia and Kazakhstan have impacted business regulation in their respective countries. Indonesia, under the rule of Suharto from 1967 to 1998, experienced a system characterized by centralized control and crony capitalism. Suharto's New Order regime implemented a series of regulations that favored his loyal supporters and family members, creating a business environment where corruption and nepotism flourished. The government tightly controlled key industries, leading to limited competition and hindering the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises. In contrast, Kazakhstan, under the rule of Nursultan Nazarbayev from 1991 to 2019, followed a different approach to business regulation. Nazarbayev implemented market-oriented reforms to attract foreign investment and diversify the country's economy. Kazakhstan embraced neoliberal policies, allowing for more competition and privatization of state-owned enterprises. However, critics argue that these reforms benefitted a small elite class closely aligned with the ruling regime, creating disparities in wealth distribution. Despite their differences, both Indonesia and Kazakhstan have faced challenges in promoting a fair and competitive business environment under dictatorial rule. Corruption, lack of transparency, and political interference have hindered economic growth and discouraged foreign investment in both countries. The concentration of power in the hands of a few has limited entrepreneurship and innovation, stifling the potential for sustainable development. As both Indonesia and Kazakhstan transitioned to more democratic systems in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, efforts were made to reform business regulations and address past injustices. Indonesia introduced anti-monopoly laws and increased transparency in government procurement processes, while Kazakhstan sought to improve its ease of doing business rankings and attract more foreign investors through economic diversification plans. In conclusion, the impact of dictators on business regulation in Indonesia and Kazakhstan has been profound, shaping the economic landscapes of both countries for decades. While each nation has taken steps towards reforming their regulatory frameworks, the legacy of authoritarian rule still lingers, reminding us of the challenges of balancing political control with economic freedom.
