Dictators have played a significant role in shaping the histories of many countries around the world. However, in more democratic nations like New Zealand, the concept of dictatorship may seem foreign and out of place. On the other hand, in countries like Cameroon, the impact of dictatorial rule can be seen in various aspects of society, including the education system.

New Zealand, known for its stable democracy and respect for human rights, has not had a history of dictatorial rule. The country follows a parliamentary democracy framework, where power is vested in elected representatives who are accountable to the people. The government operates on the principles of transparency, accountability, and the rule of law, ensuring that the rights and freedoms of its citizens are protected. In contrast, Cameroon has experienced periods of dictatorial rule under leaders such as Paul Biya, who has been in power since 1982. The education system in Cameroon has not been immune to the effects of authoritarian governance. Under a dictatorial regime, education can be used as a tool for political indoctrination and control. Dissent is often suppressed, and curriculum content may be manipulated to serve the interests of the ruling regime. In Cameroon, access to quality education is not always equitable, with disparities between urban and rural areas, as well as between different socio-economic groups. Dictatorial regimes may prioritize funding for elite institutions or educational programs that serve their political agenda, while neglecting the needs of the broader population. This can lead to a lack of resources, poorly trained teachers, overcrowded classrooms, and outdated curriculum in many schools. Despite these challenges, there are efforts being made to improve the education system in Cameroon. NGOs, international organizations, and local activists are working to address issues such as access to education, teacher training, curriculum development, and infrastructure improvement. By advocating for educational reform and promoting the importance of a quality education for all, these stakeholders are striving to overcome the obstacles posed by dictatorial governance. In conclusion, while New Zealand stands as a beacon of democracy and good governance, Cameroon serves as a contrasting example of the impact of dictatorial rule on the education system. By recognizing the challenges faced by countries under authoritarian regimes, we can work towards supporting efforts to promote inclusive and quality education for all, regardless of the political landscape.
